PART II: You Must Be Born-Again

Justification Is Salvation

The Bible teaches that salvation is wholly the work of God - - the theological word for this is monergism. In contrast, sanctification is synergistic, which means there is more than one worker. Sanctification involves the believer and the Holy Spirit. Both work together to cause the Christian to become more and more Christ-like. But salvation is wholly the work of God.

Romans 3:19–20 19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

We cannot do anything to be saved. We cannot simply work harder or invent more rules to keep --legalism, because no one is made righteous by their good works. Gospel means good news because it delivers humanity from the judgment of God’s law. Jesus Christ has taken the penalty for the sins we have committed.

Justification means: God has declared a person righteous.

Jesus Christ’s death on the cross was punishment for our sins, not His. The transfer of our guilt to Jesus Christ is known as imputation; because Jesus did this, He is able to transfer His righteousness to us. This is known as the exchanged life.

Christians are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

GRACE = God's Riches At Christ's Expense

Grace = God’s gift of salvation through Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.
