Ch. 47 What about 1 John 1:9?

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Notice that 1 John 1:9 addresses a problem mentioned in 1 John 1:8 which says:

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If the truth is not in a person, then the person is a non-Christian; the truth is not in them therefore Christ is not in them. 1 John 1:9 gives that type of person what they need. If you are the lost person in 1 John 1:8, then you need what is talked about in 1 John 1:9 i.e., you need to be purified from all unrighteousness. But if you are not the lost person in 1 John 1:8, why would you try to apply 1 John 1:9 to yourself?

Impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Hebrews 10:1–4   1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins? 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Christ’s sacrifice does not have to be repeated over and over; once it was done, He sat down:

Hebrews 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The word “propitiation” means satisfaction. God was totally satisfied with what Christ did on the cross to pay for our sins and for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, ALL sin was dealt with at the cross as mentioned in 1 John 2:2

1 John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

Hebrews 9:12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Colossians 1:13–14   13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 9:25–28   25 nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

John 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
